Dartmouth was settled in the 1650s and incorporated in 1664. The
Quakers had influence here and built a handful of meeting houses, including the
Apponagansett Friends Meeting House, which still stands today. Many Dartmouth
homes and buildings are from the turn of the last century.
Dartmouth was always well known for its
gorgeous landscape, particularly famed Padanaram. A seaside nook, Padanaram is
a hidden summertime gem for those in the know. Elegant homes are perched on the
Atlantic. The scenery is reminiscent of Nantucket with cozy cafes and small
shops set back on narrow streets. Visitors and residents fish off the small bridges while colorful sailboats dot the
harbor. Dartmouth has several beaches, and they include private and public.
But just as Dartmouth residents have ample
opportunity to stretch their sea legs in town, so can they enjoy scenic drives
through the country. Much of Dartmouth, particularly the section bordering
Westport, is open and wooded. Dartmouth once relied on agriculture and its rich
fields to sustain the town.
Today, the Dartmouth business landscape has
changed dramatically. The town has experienced a commercial growth spurt and
lacks little in amenities.
Recent additions to Dartmouth's array of shopping
choices include Kohl's, the Christmas Tree Shop and Lowe's, and more is slated.
The Target Corp. has bought a 31-acre site on State Road for its new retail
center.
Families would be pressed to find a better
array of educational institutions. Friends Academy is a private school,
educating students from pre-school to 8th grade, and Bishop Stang High School
is a private religious institution. Dartmouth is well known for its excellent
public school system, and renovations and expansions in recent years have
updated the look and size of the schools. UMass Dartmouth offers both day and
evening classes and continues to grow in recognition and popularity; ground was
recently broken for a 200,000-square-foot, $9-million research facility on the
Dartmouth campus. Rounding out the educational opportunities is the Southern
New England School of Law, a not-for-profit, independent law school.
Dartmouth remains a family-friendly town
with active residents.
