In the Heart of it All!
Town of Fairhaven:

With the cooler weather swiftly approaching, there's no better way to enjoy the remaining sunny afternoons than by taking a stroll through Fairhaven.

This small town's center is renowned for its architectural masterpieces donated by town benefactor and Standard Oil Co. millionaire Henry Huttleston Rogers during the whaling and fishing boom. The fall is a perfect time to view these impressive buildings. Shaded by massive oaks with reddish-gold leaves, they stand majestic, made of stone carved with intricate designs. Gifts consisted of the Millicent Library, Fairhaven High School, Town Hall and the Unitarian Memorial Church.

Fairhaven's history stems beyond the whaling days, when the town's shoreline was used to fight naval battles. Shortly after 1775, a fort was built and outfitted with eleven cannons. The fort was destroyed by a British invasion in 1778, but rebuilt and named Fort Phoenix; it was manned throughout the Civil War.

A massive harbor and substantial coastline shaped the town's future as a whaling and fishing port. The whaling trade brought wealthier residents to Fairhaven, and its neighbor, New Bedford, but it was Fairhaven that reveled in the generosity of resident Henry Huttleston Rogers.

Today, town-sponsored walking tours conducted by guides in period garb take visitors past the historic buildings and through Fort Phoenix. Residents embrace their history - early in September, members of the Fairhaven Village Militia commemorated the British raid of Sept. 5 and 6, 1778 by re-enacting life in 1778 and firing the fort's five cannons.

Fairhaven residents covet their community spirit. More than a dozen organizations dedicated to improving town services and maintaining the look and feel of Fairhaven exist. The Fairhaven Improvement Association's Beautification Committee decorates Fairhaven's center with evergreens, red berries and Christmas bows every holiday season, while the East Fairhaven Improvement Association is involved with the beautification of all East Fairhaven. Committees have brought about significant recreational improvements to Fairhaven in recent years, including the town's bike path and skate park.

But just as Fairhaven typifies your New England hometown, so does it offer more commercial amenities than any local, comparably sized town. Fairhaven has always boasted development along the Route 6 stretch, but recent years have brought department stores, chain restaurants, pharmacies, grocery stores and much more to the new plazas dotting Route 6. As a result, residents find they need not travel out of town for shopping, and the addition of the many amenities has actually brought in residents from neighboring towns to shop and dine.

Fairhaven's central location, and eclectic mix of past and future coupled with a distinct community feel, is enticing for prospective residents.
