It’s 2012 and it’s no secret that we live in the age of endless and immediate information. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’re selling or what service you’re providing you can pretty much bank on the fact that you’re being “Googled”. In fact, with a growing number of folks yielding smartphones these days we know our customers are scouring the web for information about us either on Google, Yelp, Facebook or some other social media resource while sitting in our model driveways before entering our homes. If you’re internet savvy then you know you’ve done it and if you’re reading this then that means you. Those who are not internet savvy will probably never read this much less know what a blog even is.

So who is Long Built Homes; Who do they service; What have we accomplished?

Long Built Homes was founded by Robert Long in 1986 with nothing more than a piece of land, set of plans, a pickup truck and a Sunday afternoon to sell it. Sounds like your typical American success story; kind of cliche but true. Since then, some 25 years later, he and a team of incredible people have helped evolve this company into one of the largest new construction builders in Massachusetts. We have serviced the entire SouthCoast region and for years have been committed to building homes and relationships that last. Our facility now is comprised of two 5,000 s.f. buildings; one for office space and the other serves as our panel shop where we are able to build our house walls in a controlled environment year round. We are one of the only builders of new homes in the SouthCoast that has an in house warranty department dedicated to servicing our customers before and after they close. As a team our goal is to help you navigate the terrain when embarking on such an important project like building a new home. All this attention to customer service has not gone unnoticed. In 2011 Long Built Homes was the recipient of a Guildmaster Award from GuildQuality. This award is only presented to builders/developers/remodelers who exhibit exemplary levels of customer service and satisfaction. That level of excellence coupled with our Energy Star partnership makes us one of the most efficient peace of mind values money can find in the SouthCoast housing market today.

In short, if you’re in the market for a new home in the SouthCoast Long Built Homes should certainly be on your short list. Call us today to see what we can do for you.

That seems to be the question!

For many years it seems we’ve found with new construction that our buyers are on the proverbial fence about hardwood in their kitchens. Most decide to squelch their inner desire to drench their brand new kitchen in the warmth that hardwood has to offer. All this to possibly avoid an unsightly mess of worn out floors in the not so far away future. However, is that really the outcome? Will your average family of four visibly wear out hardwood in a high traffic room like the kitchen in just a few short years? If yes, then what’s better than hardwood? Is it tile? One could argue that depending on the color of your tile you will forever be on your knees cleaning it. Now let’s talk about grout…if not properly sealed your grout will darken with each spill and dirt filled footstep. So what’s the better choice?

An argument can be made for both flooring choices. At the end of the day the decision has to be based on what will make you happiest when using your well deserved space. With hardwood, if you’re like me, you’ll want to inspect the soles of everyone’s shoes upon entering your home. All it takes is one little tiny unsuspecting rock to be embedded into someone’s shoe tread for your floors to be forever scarred. Don’t even get me started on the heels…just one bad one and your gleaming floors are forever marred.

As a builder of new homes in Massachusetts we know our buyers are preparing for the heavy winters, if and when we get them. So if you choose hardwood rest assured that Long Built Homes has chosen to use the Bruce Westchester Oak Strip that comes with a 50 year warranty from Bruce, the manufacturer. This will of course protect you from defective wood. The out of shape heel and rock infested tread is all you.

Let us know your thoughts.

Fertilizing in the spring actually can be harmful to a HEALTHY lawn. That’s
right. Spring fertilization encourages both the weeds and grass to grow.
So if you fertilize in the spring you will be encouraging the weeds as much
as the grass. If you wait until fall, your efforts will go into encouraging
the grasses, not the weeds.

If you are going to use fertilizer, apply one pound of nitrogen for every
1000 square feet of lawn. Use a fertilizer that includes some slow or
timed-release nitrogen and little or no phosphorus. The bag will explain
how to figure out how much you need to feed without over loading your lawn
with nutrients it doesn’t need (and wasting your money). To get the right
fertilizer, be sure to read the bag. Fertilizer is labeled with the amount
of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash (always in that order) that it contains.
For example 15-0-10 is 15% nitrogen, 0% phosphorous and 10% potash. When
you read the bag, you may be surprised. Did you know that weed-n-feed
products contain pesticides to kill those dandelions? Research at Purdue
University has shown that dogs exposed to lawns treated with pesticides have
a higher incidence of bladder cancer. Just imagine what those chemicals may
be doing to your children or grandchildren!

Contrary to popular belief, leaving the grass clippings on your lawn does
not contribute significantly to thatch. The grass clippings provide your
lawn’s free lunch. Put your lawn on the fast track to a healthy green by
mowing high (3 inches is ideal) and always leaving the clippings behind.
Proper mowing and a steady diet of succulent clippings make for a healthy
lawn that may not need any added fertilizer. Think of the time and $$$ you
can save.

Another key to keeping grass green is water. Too much water and disease
will set in; too little and the lawn will turn brown and go dormant. To
keep it green, water deeply (1 – 1 1/2 inches) once a week if we haven’t had
enough rain.

So this spring as you enjoy the greening of your lawn, think about its
health (and yours) and wait to fertilize between Labor Day and Columbus Day,
avoid using pesticides, mow high (not less than 3 inches), and let the
clippings lie.

High-tech schools and downtown development cited.

Editors of Boston Magazine, scouting the region skirting Interstate 495 for enticing bets on real estate, have placed two area communities at the top of their list of the 14 best places to live.

Lakeville and Plymouth made the cut for reasons ranging from high-tech schools to downtown redevelopment. The South Shore Chamber of Commerce also bought 18 pages of special advertising in the March issue of the monthly magazine, which hit newsstands Friday.

The magazine’s annual guide to “finding your happy place” also seems to be targeting towns that don’t typically appear on such lists.

Lakeville, for example, is the first one mentioned in the 12 page spread. Why Lakeville? “Because it’s an overlooked waterfront retreat,” the story asserts.

And Plymouth caught their eye for affordable house prices coupled with the new, technology-infused Plymouth North High School, set to open in September.

“This town, where you can get a 1,600-square foot house for less than $275,000 is a savvy shopper’s dream,” the article stated.

The magazine gushed over the new Plymouth school’s gadgets – a robot engineering lab, electric car chargers in the parking lot and interactive white boards.
